GUI or Folder Action with Automator for photo restoration library? (willing to double bounty on delivery)

Greetings! I want to, more or less, use this library to restore some family photos more easily. With the holidays nearly here, I am already receiving a bunch of pics from friends and family and thought I could share the app with the ones who aren't afraid to use a computer.

Ideally, this would be something that could run in the browser, but I'd also be thrilled if someone could come up with something that'd be able to run locally on a Mac with something like AppleScript or an Automator Folder Action.

One implementation I've found online is this, but I don't know that I need to use an API for what I want; either way, I thought this was a good way to explain sort of what I'm looking for.

Thanks and please let me know if you have any questions that'd help solve this!

Hello @sharper,

I've taken a look at the library and here are my insights.

The library relies on AI/ML which makes running it quite expensive.

In order to make a website as you suggested, we would need a dedicated powerful server which is a whole new project in itself that includes a lot of running parts. (security, maintenance etc.)

Since the site would be for family use, this building it from scratch would be "overkill" so to say.

Fortunately, it's not all negative and I have possible solutions to your issue.

Hotpot provides this service free of charge (at the moment) so you can upload your images and get them restored. The only drawback here is that you need to upload them one by one. (It can't process multiple images at the same, but I could automate this process)

If you would still like to have your own website that you could use to upload multiple images and does not require a dedicated server, it's possible. (partially) I've personally contacted their team and they offered a free tier for ~10 images/month.

However, you probably have more than 10 images so that would require you to pay for their service. I've asked them about pricing options as well and will let you know when they respond.

Regarding Automator, I don't have macOS, but it is possible if we were to use Hotpot's service. Setting up the library locally wouldn't be very practical due to its complexity.

Let me know what you think!

Best regards,
Vladimir

UPDATE: The pricing options are as follows (monthly):
  • 10 images - free
  • 30 images - $10
  • 80 images - $20
  • 200 images - $50
  • 500 images - $100
  • 1,100 images - $200
  • 2,300 images - $400
  • 5,000 images - $800
